چکیده

One of the most visible and widely felt impacts of climate warming is the change (mostly loss) of low-elevation snow cover in the midlatitudes. Snow cover that accumulates at temperatures close to the ice-water phase transition is at greater risk to climate warming than cold climate snowpacks because it affects both precipitation phase and ablation rates. This study maps areas in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States that are potentially at risk of converting from a snow-dominated to a rain-dominated winter precipitation regime, under a climate-warming scenario. A data-driven, climatological approach of snow cover classification is used to reveal these “at risk” snow zones and also to examine the relative frequency of warm winters for the region. For a rain versus snow temperature threshold of 0°C the at-risk snow class covers an area of about 9200 km in the Pacific Northwest region and represents approximately 6.5 km of water. Many areas of the Pacific Northwest would see an increase in the number of warm winters, but the impacts would likely be concentrated in the Cascade and Olympic Ranges. A number of lowerelevation ski areas could experience negative impacts because of the shift from winter snows to winter rains. The results of this study point to the potential for using existing datasets to better understand the potential impacts of climate warming.

Some notes on the characterization of two dimensional skew cyclic codes

‎‎A natural generalization of two dimensional cyclic code ($T{TDC}$) is two dimensional skew cyclic code‎. ‎It is well-known that there is a correspondence between two dimensional skew cyclic codes and left ideals of the quotient ring $R_n:=F[x,y;rho,theta]/_l$‎. ‎In this paper we characterize the left ideals of the ring $R_n$ with two methods and find the generator matrix for two dimensional s...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE Upper-Layer Circulation in the South China Sea*

Upper-layer circulation is investigated by using all available historical temperature profiles combined with climatological temperature–salinity relationships in the South China Sea. Two cyclonic eddies are revealed: one is located east of Vietnam (called the East Vietnam eddy) and the other is off northwest Luzon (called the West Luzon eddy). Both local Ekman pumping and remotely forced basin-...

NOTES AND CORRESPONDENCE On Wind, Convection, and SST Variations in the Northeastern Tropical Pacific Associated with the Madden–Julian Oscillation*

Lagged maximum covariance analysis (LMCA) is used to examine the intraseasonal variability of zonal wind, sea surface temperature (SST), and outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) in the northeastern tropical Pacific Ocean during Northern Hemisphere summertime. The analysis shows a strong temporal asymmetry in that wind and convection anomalies lead to SST anomalies, but SST anomalies are not follow...
